Meet the Crew: Northcliffe BOMS
The ocean put on a show for the Round 4 Staminade Quenchers qualifiers at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast and the crews were tested in all their skills! Congratulations to the men’s qualifying crew, Northcliffe BOMS who will be representing Staminade at Round 4 of the Ocean Thunder Surf Boat Series at Dee Why Beach in Sydney on Saturday 4th February.
Here’s your chance to meet the crew!
Bow – Simon Barnes, Barnsey is the Old Salt of the crew who grew up on the Gold Coast watching his Dad sweeping for Tallebudgera. He’s had more clubs than Greg Norman and is well known among the crew for his collection of colourful Budgie Smugglers. Not known for his love of ergos and not the fittest in the crew but he will always have a crack.
2 Seat – Dave Housten – Dr Dave is the team Dentist and was a previously a successful sculler with Gold Coast University. He started rowing surfboats in 2005 with the Rainbow Bay Hogs before work commitments took him away from surfboats and off to Bribie Island. Dave had a short hiatus before joining Northcliffe in 2015 to row with the BOMS. Dave is the anolog version of tinder and has been known for successfully matching his eligible crewmates with suitable partners. Dave has been known to break an oar from time to time getting stuck into it through the break.
3 Seat – Luke Barker, Luke Started rowing at Northcliffe in 2008 after previously winning the Head of the Torrens with his schoolboy crew in South Australia. He moved to the Gold Coast and took up surfboat rowing after being recruited by the Northcliffe Braves while taking a long walk on Northcliffe Beach. Luke is a one club rower after 8 seasons which is quite a rarity on the Gold Coast.
Stroke – Christian Newland, Christian came across to surfboats from Stillwater rowing in 2012 with the Brighton SLSC in South Australia. After realising that the Gold Coast was the place to be he moved up to row with Northcliffe in 2015. Christian is known for his excellent personal hygiene and keeping it smooth.
Sweep – Michael Cameron, Started rowing in U21 division of Surfboat Racing at Fremantle SLSC in 1996 before taking up sweeping in 1999. After 11 years of combining rowing and sweeping he hung up the speedos in 2007 and has since swept Open Men’s Crews at Cottesloe and then at Northcliffe. Doesn’t mind cracking a wave at the alley whenever he can get a chance.
Crew Mascot – Tom Cameron, Tom is the 10 year old son of the sweep who can be found at any of the local carnivals carrying the drink bottles and helping carrying the boat. Tom is our number 1 fan who hasn’t taken off his Staminade hat since it was presented after the crews success in Round 4 of Staminade Quenchers Qualifying.
