In 1980, tennis greats John Newcombe and Tony Roche were running tennis camps in Armidale New South Wales and Staminade were the major sponsor. In case you need reminding about who this legend is…
John Newcombe (nickname “Newk”, born 1944, awesome moustache) was a world number one tennis player who won seven Grand Slam singles titles between 1967 and 1975 (2 x Australian, 3 x Wimbledon, 2 x US), and an all-time record 17 doubles majors. He’s one of the few men to have been ranked world number one in both singles and doubles. And this guy below?
Tony Roche. He’s is no slouch either. He and his mate Newk won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles together – more than any other men’s team in tennis history. Left-handed Roche only won one Grand Slam (1996, French) but he went on to coach Ivan Lendl, Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer. Quite the coach. Those kids in Armidale should have been pretty chuffed.
But why is this guy on the right leaning on the tree – was he camera shy, feeling poorly, out of sorts? Can anybody tell us?
