24 hours til race day

In the lead-up to 2014’s Challenge Wanaka Triathlon, we’ve been following the gruelling training schedule of team Angry Birds. One swimmer, one cyclist and one runner, this team is pushing the boundaries of physical endurance. They came third in the all-female category last year – can they beat their current record this year?

It’s race day tomorrow! We had a quick chat with the girls to see how they’re doing in advance of the event.

How are you feeling?

Julie-Anne: I’m really excited! Wanaka’s so beautiful and there’s a great buzz at this time of year as events are happening throughout the week. Also I can’t wait to hang out for a few days with Katy and Nicola. And no work – woohoo!

Nicola: I’m really excited and looking forward to it. I feel in much better shape than last year and know I’ve trained well and hard in the lead up.

Katy: Excited and also pleased it looks like good weather conditions – sunny and not too hot.

What are you most excited about?

Nicola: Seeing my parents, beating my mate Russell Newmarch out of the water and supporting all the cyclists by ringing my cowbell.

Katy: The atmosphere and the buzz around town, and being inspired by watching the pros and age groupers racing.

Julie-Anne: The scenery, the atmosphere, seeing people we met last year and the drinks and party afterwards!

What are you least looking forward to?

Nicola: The run from water to transition.

Julie-Anne: The hills on the bike course. I remember a couple of big ones last year and there was a horrible head wind up one of them which felt like torture.

Katy: I’m mostly worried about hitting the wall: last year I blew up at 26km and had a tough time mentally and physically getting round the rest of the course.

Any must-haves for tomorrow?

Katy: My Garmin to track the distance, my iPod shuffle, and my lucky colourful shorts and recovery outfit. I’m sure Nicola would add our Angry Bird hats to the list!

Julie-Anne: A normal front wheel (in case it’s super windy on the day) and spare tubes with extenders, gas canisters and pump.

Nicola: New, tinted goggles to protect from glare and prevent fogging like last year, pawpaw ointment to prevent chaffing, cowbell for supporting the cyclists – Tour de France style, and yes Katy – my Angry Birds hat!

Good luck girls – we’re cheering for you! And we want photos of you in your hats, please!
